A Walk Down Memory Lane.....

1982 
  • Kathy Foster, Bill Jones and a small group of friends begin meeting to discuss opening a home for abused children.
  • Initial funding and support from the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur was crucial to Casa de Esperanza’s ability to provide services to children and families impacted by abuse, neglect and poverty.
  • Houston attorney Paul Daugherty makes initial donation of $500 and the first Casa de Esperanza  house is rented. 
1983
  • Dr. Kathleen Motil, a pediatrician, visits Casa de Esperanza and begins volunteering and providing a weekly clinic for the children.  “Dr. Kay” later serves as the Chair of the Casa de Esperanza Governing Board for seventeen years. 
1984
  • Two volunteer psychologists, including Ronnie Koehn, visit Casa de Esperanza and begin to provide services to the children. Ronnie is later hired on staff full-time and continues his work to this day.
  • Two more homes are opened to care for children.
1985
  • Casa de Esperanza hires a full-time Volunteer Coordinator.  
  • The Community Foster Care Program is established.
1986 
  • The first child with HIV is cared for by Casa de Esperanza.
  • Casa de Esperanza raises $300,000 with the help of friends and family.
1988
  • Casa de Esperanza celebrates its first adoption.
1989
  • The first Casa de Esperanza Gala takes place.
1990
  • Mary Nichols donates 4 acres on Almeda Road to Casa de Esperanza.
1991
  • The AIDS Family Center was established to offer services to mothers and children impacted by HIV/AIDS.
1993
  • Intake and Assessment Home was opened.
1995
  • Casa de Esperanza is the beneficiary of the first Houston Rockets Tux & Tennies gala and a portion of the proceeds are used to build the Rockets Center.
1996
  • Kathy Foster wins the SAAVY Award, sponsored by Macy’s.
1997
  • Casa Academy opens to provide educational support to post-adoption clients.
2000
  • 100th adoption takes place
  • The Hand of Hope internship was established.
2006
  • Kathy Foster is inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame.
2007
  • Bill Jones receives St. Luke’s Episcopal Heath Charities Community Heath Leadership Award.
2008
  • The new neighborhood opens. David Weekley Homes built the homes at cost and the Morgan Group built the neighborhood’s infrastructure.
2011
  • Casa de Esperanza is the beneficiary of NBC’s Today Show’s Lend a Hand Program. Over $2.6 million in goods and services were provided to Casa de Esperanza.  Casa was able to share these items with over 35 Houston area and Fort Bend agencies.
2012
  • Michael Cordúa and Cordúa Restaurants hosts Casa’s annual gala for the 23rd year. It was a record breaking event and raised over $1 Million. We appreciate the Cordúa’s support and the work  of all our gala chairs!
  • Casa de Esperanza is proud to celebrate 30 years of service to the greater Houston metropolitan community.
