Teens, music, pizza…yes it is a common site to see friends gathering
together, but a recent gathering of a group of Houston teens had a different
purpose. With the approval of Kathy Foster, Casa’s Founder and Director, a
group of high school students came together for the initial meeting of the
Casa de Esperanza Teen Advisory Board.
The Teen Board will
provide a connection for teens from the community to plan activities for the
children of Casa and to assist in various volunteer capacities to support
Casa. Target members are high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who
have an interest in the mission of Casa.
Many teens already at home with Casa
Many teens have
become familiar with Casa through family projects, parents volunteering,
Scout projects and church activities. Invitations to be a Founding Member of
the Teen Advisory Board were extended to 20 high school students. The
students commit to serve on the Board for two years. A small group of
seniors are serving a one- year term. The teens will be given the
opportunity to recommend other students to serve on the board from their
high school when their term is completed.
Teen Board projects
The initial project
for the Teen Board is coordinating the Casa de Esperanza birthday party.
The students are busy planning the various booths and activities for all to
enjoy on November 7.
The Teen Board
members may also assist in other ways at Casa, such as cooking a meal for
the children, yard clean up, helping during the holidays with Christmas toy
donations, and administrative support.
